Intensive Course by Prof. Pierre Berthoud 2011

To end the year 2011, STT Reformed Injili Internasional invites theological scholars to investigate Francis Schaeffer's method of apologetics. This course will be delivered by Prof. Pierre Berthoud, who is Professor Emeritus at Faculté Jean Calvin, France. Equally essential to the course, a talk on forgiveness - viewing from three aspects, from three testaments in the Scripture - will help us to meditate our relationship to God and our neighbors.

Seminar: FORGIVENESS, from One Testament to the Other

This study will deal with three aspects of forgiveness which involve both our relationships to God and to our neighbor. The first part dealing with Sin, Providence and Forgiveness, will concentrate on the Reconciliation of Joseph with his Brothers laying emphasis on the dramatic aspects of the narrative. (Genesis 42.1-45.11 & 50.15-21). The second part will dwell on the centrality of the role of the mediator as presented in Job 33 : My Intercessor is my Friend. The third part will concentrate on the transforming power of forgiveness as illustrated in Acts 2. Forgiveness is at the heart of the Christian life, in our individual lives as well as in in the family, the Church and the public place. It is essential to Christian growth and maturity.

Intensive Course: Francis Schaeffer's Apologetics and Worldview
Monday - Friday, October 10-14, 2011
Mon-Thu: 8.00 am - 2.30 pm, Fri: 8.00 - 10.00 am
F. A. Schaeffer was one of the most influential Evangelical and Reformed Theologians of the 20th Century. This course will deal more specifically with his Apologetic method emphasizing both his love for truth and his compassion for his contemporaries. Not only was he concerned for the defense ofthe God's divinely revealed message, but also for communicating the Gospel in such a way that it could be truly understood by modern people. While emphasizing a pre-suppositional approach to Apologetics he continually sought for the common ground that would allow him to really understand his interlocutor while sharing with him the Christian world and life view and the uniqueness of the person and the work of Jesus Christ.

Visiting professor: Prof. Pierre Berthoud

Professor Pierre Berthoud taught biblical languages at the Free Evangelical Seminary of Vaux-sur-Seine (1969-1971). From 1971 to 1975, he worked with Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer, head of the study centre, l’Abri Fellowship in Huémoz (Switzerland). He participated in the French translation of several of F. Schaeffer’s books. In 1975, he became professor of Old Testament at the Free Reformed Seminary of Aix-en-Provence. He taught Old Testament and Apologetics there until August 2009 when he retired. He still teaches Old Testament at the Seminary. Professor Berthoud was Doyen (Dean) of the Seminary for 19 years, from 1984 to 2001 and from 2007 to 2009. Concerned by the various practical and cultural implications of the Christian faith, he has been actively involved in Scripture Union, Le Parvis des Arts, the National Council of the French Evangelical Alliance. He is president of the Fellowship of European Evangelical Theologians (since 2008) and has written many articles on different themes related to the Old Testament and to Apologetics. His book, En quête des origines. Les premières étapes de l’histoire de la Révélation : Genèse 1 à 11, Cléon d’Andran: Excelsis/Aix-en-Provence: Kerygma, was published at the end of 2008.
